Welcome to the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust web site!
In 1998, interested citizens and civic leaders formed the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust to provide stewardship, education and advocacy for the 366 acre Vancouver National Historic Reserve. Designated by Congress in 1996, the Historic Reserve includes the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Pearson Air Field & Museum, Officers Row & Vancouver Barracks. The Trust recognizes the Historic Reserve as both a community legacy and a national treasure - Vancouver's story is the nation's.
Initially, the Trust led preservation efforts for the Jack Murdock Aviation Center (home of the Pearson Air Museum), and the General O. O. Howard House, which provides office space for the Trust. Currently, the Trust is working with the US Army and the National Park Service on the preservation and re-use of the barracks when the Army vacates the facility in the coming years.
Another important component of the Trust's work is it's educational focus, which brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and interests to learn from the past and prepare for the future. Among these efforts is the annual George C. Marshall Lecture, where speakers such as Colin Powell, Tom Brokaw, Madeleine Albright & General Peter Pace honor the legacy of the former Vancouver Barracks commander and world statesman. Another important annual event is the 4th of July Celebration culminating in one of the largest fireworks displays west of the Mississippi River.
